The American Chemical Society

The American Chemical Society Scholars Program

We are pleased to announce that the American Chemical Society (ACS) Scholars Program is receiving applications for the 2004-2005 academic year. The ACS Scholars Program is currently in its eighth year of funding authorization by the Society's Board of Directors.

The goal of this scholarship program is to aid in building an awareness of the value and rewards associated with careers in science and to assist students in acquiring skills and credentials needed for success in these areas. The scholarship is designed to encourage African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students to pursue undergraduate college degrees in the chemical sciences.

The American Chemical Society Scholars Program will award approximately 100 scholarships to undergraduate students interested in four-year degrees in the chemical sciences; those interested in transferring from two-year colleges to four-year colleges to pursue chemical science degrees; and to two-year students intending to pursue degrees in chemical technology. High school seniors who will be entering college are also eligible. The scholarship is valued at up to $2500 per academic year for freshmen, and up to $3000 per academic year for sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

In the past we have received inquiries about the definition of chemical sciences. With respect to the American Chemical Society Scholars Program, a chemical science degree includes the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and environmental science. For those chemical science specialties not listed, there must be a strong component of chemistry included in the program in order to meet our definition of chemical science.

We have included in this mailing a copy of the application form. an instruction sheet explaining the eligibility requirements of the scholarship. and an overview of the program. The Web Site http://chemistry.org/scholars can also be accessed for an application or information about the program.

A number of corporations and other organizations have joined with the ACS to co-sponsor students in this scholarship program. A student who is selected to be the recipient of a coporate award may have the added opportunity for a summer internship. Mentoring is considered essential for students in the chemical sciences and the Society offers centering support for these programs. Details of the centering support are made available to scholarship recipients at the beginning of each academic year.

We would like to thank you in advance for your interest in this program. If you have any questions about the application process, please call 1-800-227-5558 (ext. 6250) or send an e-mail scholars@acs.org.

The Order Sons of Italy in America National Leadership Grants

The Order Sons of Italy in America awards close to one million dollars annually in scholarships to deserving students through our various state and local lodges. In addition, the Sons of Italy Foundation annually awards several National Leadership Grants.

Along with the financial aspect of the award, the National Leadership Grant also provides the prestige of being recognized as a national leader among students of Italian ancestry. Current high school seniors, undergraduate students at all levels, and those in graduate programs may apply for a grant.
