What Is the Honors Program?

aThe Honors Program is a distinctive part of the Albright experience that is aimed specifically toward our most talented and motivated students. As one of these students, you will be placed in a challenging yet supportive environment within which you can develop your critical and creative thinking skills and find ways to use these skills to make a difference in the larger community.

At Albright, "Honors" is not a code word for more work. In your high school, "Honors" may have referred primarily to AP classes, where you were expected to do a lot more of the same sort of work that students in regular sections were expected to do.

"Honors" at Albright means something quite different. The main goal of our program is not to require a lot of extra work from you; instead, we want to provide you with a variety of opportunities for learning in innovative ways. Because you and your Honors classmates have unusual levels of ability and motivation, professors can count on you to take responsibility for your learning. This frees the professor to structure learning environments that are far more interactive. They can do less lecturing, for example, and more discussing. This is a lot more fun for everybody and allows for a more thorough and engaging exploration of the topics.

In the end, though, Honors at Albright is about more than just classes. It's about community. That is why we place such a great emphasis on the co-curricular aspects of the Honors Program. In subsequent sections of this guide, you will find further descriptions of the Honors Club, the Honors House at Mohn Hall, and CELAR (Center for Experiential Learning and Research) each of which is designed to support the Honors community.
