GEAC meeting
September 18, 2008

In attendance:  Dave Balaban, Joe Thomas, Irene Langran, Jennifer Koosed, Fouad Kalouche, Al Cacicedo, Karen Campbell, Dan Falabella, Melissa Nicolas

  1.  Al shared handouts from Middle States Assessment.
  2. Staffing freshmen seminar--Dave Balaban (registrar).

    1.  Joe said funding the extra sections was not an issue but finding the people to staff   them may be an issue.
    2. Various suggestions about how to fit the seminar into the curriculum were circulated.  No consensus.
    3. A question about the 3 semester foreign language requirement was raised. No consensus.  A decision was made to invite Adam to a future meeting.  The committee wants to know if the foreign language department wants a competency based approach or a time-in-course approach.
  2. A motion was made to call a vote of the GEAC committee to decide what proposal we wanted to put forward.  The options were:
  3. Add first year seminar and not take anything away
  4.  Remove a humanities requirement
  5.  go back to replacing 102 with freshmen seminar

      The vote of the committee was 6 for option A; one for option B; and 0 for option C

  1.  Committee started review of freshmen seminar description
    1.  question was raised about if there is a diversity requirement in freshmen seminar—no consensus by adjournment
  2.  Meeting adjourned at 5:35 pm
