GEAC
September 1, 2008
In attendance: Jennifer Koosed, Fouad Kalouche, Dan Falabella, Kennon Rice, Joe Thomas, Andrea Chapdelaine, Karen Campbell, Irene Langran, Al Cacicedo, and Melissa Nicolas
Joe agreed to send an e-mail to the Freshman Forum Committee asking for their participation in the upcoming workshops.
Fouad distributed materials (a letter and description) for the first-year seminar workshops. He requested comments for revisions.
There was considerable discussion of the need for a one-page overview for the faculty of GEAC’s forthcoming proposal. However, the lack of finalization of some aspects of the proposal led to a decision to postpone the preparation of this document.
Jennifer will work with the EPC to hold an October faculty vote on dropping ENG 102 (to be replaced by the first seminar).
Andrea noted that GEAC’s proposal will need to go to the board, hopefully for the winter meeting.
The group discussed a schedule for addressing remaining components of the curriculum revision. The group agreed to cover the topics in the following order: first-year seminar (1), foundations, first-year seminar (2), clusters, and a capstone project.
Al expressed concerns over the writing component of the first-year seminars. In particular, there was a discrepancy that was noted between the skills and backgrounds of the instructors as well as the design of the course and the learning outcomes. These concerns were echoed by Melissa. A continuing need for faculty development in this area was noted.
Al stated that it would be helpful for students to take the seminar and ENG 101 during the same semester. The English Department will meet tomorrow to discuss dropping ENG 102.
Andrea noted that the Admissions Department will need updated information now, as they have been recruiting for next year. Passing the AP exam will still constitute credit, although it will not be a substitute for ENG 101.
Melissa agreed to revise the description of the seminars in consultation with Joe, for discussion at the next meeting.
