GEAC Minutes
May 11, 2009
Attendees: Kennon Rice, Joe Thomas, Melissa Nicolas, Irene Langran, Al Cacicedo, and Dan Falabella
Meeting began at 4p.m.
Governance: The committee discussed governance issues for the next academic year. Joe Thomas reported on the previous EPC meeting. The issue is unresolved and there is a debate as to whether it is best to have oversight in a committee, a director, or both. GEAC believes a committee would be best but due to the need to have oversight promptly, a director might be appointed while a committee is being established in the fall. If it is both, the relationship between the two would need to be clarified. The committee noted the critical need for oversight and to resolve this matter quickly. The critical need for oversight extended particularly to implementation of the FYS in the short run.
Dissemination of proposal: The committee discussed how and when the new GEAC proposal would be distributed to faculty. The committee agreed to release it the first week of August at the latest. The committee will coordinate with the chairs of the EPC, and FEC. The committee should reserve time on the agendas of the initial meetings of chairs (9/16), EPC (?), and FEC (?) meetings to discuss the proposal.
Edits to document:
The committee will send the latest drafts of the various components to Irene Langran, who will compile them into a single document for review.
First-year seminar: The “freshman seminar” will be changed to the “first-year seminar.” Joe Thomas reported that there were 22 seminars expected to run in the fall. We would need eight sections in the spring, in addition to accommodating those who fail in the fall. At 15/section, it's 330 students and 180 without seminars, and 12 sections needed in spring. Currently there are five seminars slated for the spring. The discussion revolved around how to recruit instructors for the spring as well as fall 2010. The issue of what to do with people who fail freshman forum needs to be resolved.
The committee made additional edits to foundations and connections.
Meeting adjourned at 5:30p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Irene Langran
