and Design
Associate Professor
Heller Horacek, Chair
Lecturers Danko, Martin, Pototsky, Wiard, and Wolbers
The department of visual arts and design encompasses
courses in textile design and visual and apparel merchandising.
The various curricula of the department are designed to provide
students in the visual arts with high quality professional training,
a deep understanding of both theory and practice in the visual arts,
and an appreciation of the historical role which the visual arts
have played in creating the world in which we live.
Visual and Apparel Merchandising and Textiles
and Design
The department of visual arts and design offers
two areas of concentration leading to the bachelor of arts degree:
visual & apparel merchandising and textiles & design. Both
visual & apparel merchandising and textiles & design are
individual yet integrated fields of study. These areas of concentration
possess a commonality of mission and provide the student with a
curriculum that addresses issues of research and development, design,
manufacturing, marketing, and, finally, the consumerism of textile
and apparel products.
In addition to imparting the sense of exploration,
development of technical skills, and the knowledge required for
professional applications, both areas are founded on a broad and
intense humanistic approach to improving the ecological impact of
textiles on society. These in turn contribute to the aesthetic,
cultural, functional, and sociological needs of the individual.
Careers for graduates in these concentrations
include textile researcher; fabric designer; interior designer;
fashion buyer; department/specialty store manager; merchandise manager;
visual merchandiser; advertiser; designer; and executive retail
manager.
